Q: What is Video Poker, and how is it different from regular poker?
A: Poker is, of course, a game that can be played with real playing cards. Video Poker,
however, is meant to be played exclusively electronically. It grew out of the Video Poker machines
at casinos and bars -- standalone arcade-type games meant to separate you from your money.
Video Poker has also been a staple on computer screens for many years, and it's easy to see why.
Unlike regular poker, Video Poker is meant to be played solo. It has very few rules, so can
be picked up in just a few minutes, and games are very quick -- perfect for short breaks between
real work.
There are lots of Video Poker games available, typically only varying only in how much
multimedia razzle-dazzle is packed into the experience. Given the simple rules and scoring,
the only place to improve is with better graphics, fancier animations, and wilder sounds.
Whether all the bells and whistles are worthwhile or not is a matter for your own taste.
Personally, I appreciate games on the lean-and-mean end of the scale -- games with simple,
addictive gameplay, whose authors haven't gone overboard with with animation and sound.
